2024 Review & Gallery

The 2024 elk season was one for the books! This year’s elk hunt was one of the best we have ever experienced.

Elk numbers are good, and this provides hunters opportunities on bulls. As always, some weeks were better than others, but overall, the 2024 season was as good as it gets for hunting elk in our areas. We had near 100% opportunity on bulls and by the end of the season we were over 80% success on hunters punching their tag and going home with a bull.

The weather this past fall was warm and at times, even hot, it was also as dry as we have ever experienced. These conditions can make for tough elk hunting, but for some reason things kept going our way and bulls kept hitting the ground. Horn growth was good and a lot of the bulls we harvested had size and mass.

The past several years shooting has been a major problem with our clients, but this year hunters came through and made it happen. A big shout out to our hunters. Shooting was a lot better this year and hunters capitalized on opportunities and made shots count. Great job guys!!

Trophy Mountain Outfitters continues to have the best guides and team in the business. With hot weather and tough hunting conditions like we experienced this past season it makes all the difference having top quality guides. They make things happen and go get ’em. Hands down TMO’s guides are as good as they get, and the results are hunters going home with a bull in their truck when they leave the trailhead.

Thanks to everyone that made the 2024 elk season one of the best we have ever had!

2023 Review & Gallery

Western Wyoming continues to have high numbers of elk and elk counts in all areas we hunt continue to be over herd unit objectives set by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. There are some phenomenal elk hunting opportunities in Western Wyoming right now.

The 2023 elk season was full of everything you can expect from a season hunting elk. The rut seemed later last year than normal. Bulls seemed slower to bugle during the early season but on the later hunts (well into October) bulls were bugling and rutting hard giving us opportunities at calling bulls in that we usually don’t have on October elk hunts.

We had weeks where the hunting was everything you can hope for on an elk hunt; lots of elk, bulls screaming, and opportunities on quality bulls throughout the week. We also had hunts that were slow, and the hunting was tough. Elk were timbered up and not feeding out from the timber or feeding back into the timber before shooting light.

Archery season was a mixed bag and it really depended on where we were hunting. Two of the camps on the first week of archery season were full steam ahead, bulls going crazy, and we were able to knock a couple bulls down first day. Another camp was slow. Bulls were not talking much, and things were quiet. The second week of archery was a hit and bulls were bugling with lots of action.

Each year is different on which week will be better and which camp will have the best elk hunting that season. Rifle season over all was another great year. We were able to take several large bulls and the quality of bulls in Western Wyoming is at an all time high.

If you have a desire to do a back country horseback elk hunt in Wyoming, give us a call.

2022 Review & Gallery

The 2022 season was one of the best we’ve had for quality Wyoming elk hunting in the past 10 years.  The stars seemed to align with lots of elk and some great bulls.  Horn growth in 2022 was really impressive and it showed.   Elk numbers were good in all of our camps and it was a fun and exciting fall with non-stop action.  Archery season was full bore with bulls going crazy.  We took a few nice 5 and 6 points and had some missed opportunities on a couple stompers, but everyone saw lots of elk and had lots of action.  Rifle season on Sept. 26 was over the top.  Weather was perfect and bulls were bugling.  Second week of the season kept up and we had a great hunt.  Our opening week from our drive in camp, Oct. 15, was probably the slowest hunt of the season, but everyone in camp had opportunities on bulls and we were in elk everyday.  The last week of October was again one of our best hunts and with some snow and cold weather the big bulls showed up and came out of hiding.  It was a blast!  But, as good as the elk hunting was for 2022 our luck on taking bulls was not there.  We had more bulls missed or wounded this past fall than we’ve had in the last several years combined.  For one reason or another quite a few hunters weren’t able to make shots count when an opportunity presented itself.  We missed bulls from 80, 120, 250, and 300 yards.  The majority of missed shots and wounded bulls were not difficult shots.  Hunting is hunting and this will always happen to some degree.  But, I contribute this to hunters not being comfortable with their rifle and scope.  Today’s scopes and rifles have the ability to shoot long distances and are unreal how they can preform if the shooter knows and is familiar with the gun, especially in a backcountry hunting situation.  With turrets, dials, hash lines and multiple crosshairs hunters have too many things going on in the heat of the moment and shots go all over the mountain.   Unless a hunter is very familiar and comfortable with this type of rifle and scope, knowing it inside and out and able to operate it in an intense hunting situation, I recommend bringing a simple scope with a single crosshair and a gun that you are comfortable with.  This said, 2022 was still an awesome season with some great bulls taken and some amazing memories made.   I want to thank everyone that hunted with us this past year and a huge thanks to the best group of guides you will find on a mountain.  We can’t wait for 2023 – start making your plans!

2021 Review & Gallery

Elk numbers in the areas we hunt are doing well and it is a great time to hunt elk. With the ability to operate 5 hunting camps we spread our hunting pressure out over a large area, we do not over hunt one place. Some of our camps will only be hunted the first week, and other camps we will offer a second week of elk hunting. With camps located in two separate elk units we offer two opening weeks for rifle season. September 26th from our pack in wilderness camps and October 15th from our drive to wall tent camp.
We have something to offer most elk hunters whether an archery hunt, early season rifle hunt, or late season elk hunt we have it all.
This past archery season was not in our favor harvesting bulls. With a couple bulls missed or wounded things didn’t go our way.
Things turned around on the early season rifle hunt, and we connected on some great bulls. With blue skies and warm temperatures, the bulls were bugling and going nuts. It was a fun and successful week to hunt elk. The season continued in our favor and our drive to camp was a great hunt. Opening day Oct. 15th was a little slower than usual and we had to keep grinding away but with awesome guides and hardworking hunters we had a successful week and got some great bulls. The final week of the season was one of our best weeks of the year. Camp tagged out early and everyone got a nice bull. A lot of our success goes to the great group of hunting guides that is part of our team each year. The guides are top notch and the best in the business and without them it wouldn’t be possible. A huge shout out also to our 2021 clients and a big thank you for hunting with us. We are looking forward to another great elk season next year!

2020 Review & Gallery

The 2020 elk season was another solid fall of elk hunting.  Archery season was good and with bulls talking we had success on bow hunters getting shots and harvesting bulls.  Rifle season, September 26, kicked off with a bang and we had a great week.  With warm temperatures and a high pressure in place the bulls were bugling and it made for a fun successful week.  On the opening week from our drive to camp, October 15, the hunting was tougher than usual.  But with hard hunting and positive attitudes we ended the week with several nice bulls down.  The following hunt and last week of the season was an exciting week of hunting as we took one of the bigger bulls we have taken in a few years and all hunters in camp tagged out a few days early.   2020 was a good year for elk hunting and we continue to offer some great elk hunts with high success rates.  With the mild winter we are having this year horn growth on bulls could be very good and 2021 could be stellar.  We are definitely looking forward to another great season of chasing elk.

2019 Review & Gallery

The 2019 elk season was solid all fall. We were able to take a big bull on our early season archery hunt and kick the season off right. Everyone on archery had chances and shot opportunities on bulls. Rifle season, Sept 26th, started a little slow with some bad weather setting in the second day of the hunt. After 3 days of fog, rain, and snow we were starting to wonder how things would shake out. When the weather cleared up stuff turned our way and we were able to get some bulls on the ground. Over all it was a good hunt considering the nasty weather. Opening week from our drive to camp, October 15th, was awesome! We had lots of bulls around and the area was loaded with elk. We were able to connect on some nice bulls and everyone saw lots of elk. The second week from the drive to camp was stellar and with only 2 bull hunters in camp we took two nice bulls first morning of the hunt, wrapping the season up early. Every year is different from the last, with weather and game movement we never know which camp or hunt is going to be the best, but all of our camps offer some great elk hunting. We’d like to thank all our elk hunters for coming with us and thanks to all our guides, packers and cooks for the great job they do. Without you all this wouldn’t be possible. We look forward to another great elk season in 2020. Let ’em bugle.

2018 Review & Gallery

2018 was a great fall hunting elk. We started the archery season off taking 2 nice 6-point bulls first day out. The second week of archery was tough from one of our camps due to the smoke of forest fires burning in the area, this made for some tough hunting. Rifle season started on Sept. 26th with a bang!! Literally. We were 100% success from 1 of our camps that week and the other 2 camps had great success with hunters connecting on bulls and getting shot opportunities. Good weather and lots of sunshine had the bulls talking and lots of action. The season kept on a roll through the second week from our pack in wilderness hunt. The opening week from our drive to camp was a blast with lots of elk in the area. We had 8 clients in camp that week and connected on 6 bulls with everyone having opportunities. If every fall was like the 2018 elk season life would be easy. Good weather and lots of elk. I can’t stress enough to be in good shape. The better physical condition you are in the higher your chances at being successful on taking home a bull. We see year after year the clients in better physical shape; able to ride, hike, and shoot straight are consistently more successful on the hunt. A big thank you to everyone: Guides, Packers, Cooks and Clients for a great elk year.

2017 Review & Gallery

The 2017 elk season was definitely thumbs up and went as good as we could have had with the conditions we faced. With a freak early snow in mid Sept. of over 2 feet in the high elevations many of the elk changed their usual patterns and the opening week of elk was not as we had hoped. In our scouting before the big storm, we had located several nice 340 plus class bulls and we were licking our chops waiting to go after them on opening day. But, the deep snow moved them out of the high basins we had been watching them in and down to the thick timber. Thanks to the effort of the guides putting out 110% we were able to go 75% harvest on bulls the first week. From there things continued to go our way and the opening week from our drive-in camp on October 15th was as good as we have seen going 100% and knocking down some nice bulls. The second week was also stellar and all but 1 hunter tagged out on a bull that week. Thanks to everyone that made 2017 a success.

2015 Review & Gallery

2015 produced some of the best horn growth and quality bulls we have seen in a long time. This season was like many of the past elk seasons with peaks and valleys throughout the fall. Archery season saw some great action and we took several nice bulls with a couple of real trophies being wounded or missed. Rifle season started off great bagging some nice bulls and harvesting near 100% out of a couple of our camps, but having some tougher luck in other places. (We did have 3 big, 300 plus inch bulls wounded and lost this fall. All 3 were shot with 7mm’s. FYI, in my opinion, if you are hunting elk with a 7mm make sure to have a heavy grain bullet and shoot them through the front shoulder. A 30 cal. is still a guide’s favorite caliber. ) With warm weather and lots of feed and vegetation from a wet summer and spring, the elk were able to spend more time than usual in the timber making hunting tougher than usual. Predators continue to play a roll in western Wyoming and this fall we were affected by some factors that were out of our control. Overall though, it was a great fall and many clients went home with some awesome memories and great bulls.

2014 Review & Gallery

The 2014 elk season was a lot like the steep mountains that we hunt full of high peaks and a few low valleys but overall we had a great year. Archery season was one of the best we have had with lots of screaming bulls echoing up and down the canyons. The majority of the archers were able to make their shots count and we put several nice bulls on the ground, making for one of the highest success archery seasons we have had. Opening day of rifle season was beautiful, sunny, and a perfect day to be in the mountains hunting elk. With lots of elk being seen and heard we took some great bulls opening day. That night, however, the rain set in and the next 5 days were more like hunting in a monsoon rainforest than high mountains of western Wyoming. The endless downpour of rain made conditions tough for locating and getting on bulls, but we were still able to connect on a few more good bulls before the hunt ended. The remainder of the season was tougher than usual on elk hunting, but with lots of hard work and some luck we continued to find bulls and fill our pack strings with meat and horns. Some awesome bulls were taken this fall with a few being as big of bulls as we take. A big thanks to all our 2014 elk hunters for their hard work and never give up attitudes.

2013 Review & Gallery

After having a banner fall for elk in 2012, most of the 2013 elk season was at the mercy of mother nature and the elements she can deal out. At daylight on opening day of rifle season it looked more like mid December in the wilderness high country, not late Sept. The 2 Clients I was guiding and myself were at 9,000ft in a blizzard with snow up to our waists at first daylight. Where in years past we had been in herds of elk with rutting bulls echoing up the canyon now we found ourselves in a winter wonderland with blowing snow and low visibility. This was the setup to the rest of our elk season; snow, rain, wet, and dispersed herds of elk made for tough hunting conditions but overall it was a very good season with some awesome bulls taken and some great memories made. The cold wet weather may have also put lady luck on the side of some nice big bulls, fogged up scopes, frozen firing pins or a cold rattled hunter gave several bulls the opportunity to make another season and kept them off the Trophy Mountain website. So far this winter we have seen some quality big bulls and high numbers of mature bulls on the winter grounds giving us the expectation of an awesome fall of elk hunting in 2014.

2012 Review & Gallery

2012 was one of the best elk seasons we have ever had. The majority of our season was what a hunter dreams elk hunting to be. Great horn growth and ample elk made 2012 a load of fun and one to remember. The addition of our end of the road drive-in camp also gave us an extra boost of great elk hunting as that area doesn’t open until Oct. 15th and has a ton of elk along with some great bulls. In 2012 we were near 100% opportunity on rifle and archery elk hunts and had a very high harvest success with most bulls taken being 5 and 6 point bulls.
